Epilogue
Many years later…
Avelina Luthanda walked a few steps behind her father, the rest of her younger siblings a few more paces behind them. “The estate grounds are truly beautiful this spring, Lord Father,” Avelina said with a demure bow, accenting the action by bending down her furry fox-like ears as though they were bowing to her father as well.
Her father, the most influential and feared nobleman in the region, chuckled. “Lusher than I may have ever seen it,” he said without looking back at any of his fox-eared and fox-tailed children. “Those gardeners I’ve brought in from distant lands have done a good job. But remember all of you, do NOT wander the grounds unescorted. Some of the plant life is not what it seems.”
“Yes, Lord Father,” the pack of children said obediently.
Lord Luthanda looked over his shoulder then, glancing at his oldest daughter, Avelina. “You especially,” he told her before looking away. “Now that you’re of age some of the plant life, if it mistook you for someone who didn’t belong on the estate… Well, we’ll just say that you’re old enough now that it would react differently to you especially since you’re a female.”
Avelina held in the resigned sigh she wanted to let it out. She’d understood from a very young age that although her father was willing to dote on her and her sisters none of them would ever be more than “females” in his eyes. As girls they were at best things to be made pretty to be married off or at worst things to be ignored. It was only her younger brothers that truly mattered to their father.
His precious ‘heirs’, she thought a little bitterly. Yes, he doted on her and her sisters. They wanted for nothing, but even so they knew they mattered little in their father’s grand schemes.
My brothers are being raised to replace him when he dies, she thought, eyes boring into the back of her father’s head. He’s already starting to show his age. Compared to how long all of us half-Vulpenites will live he’ll be gone by the time we’ve barely begun our lives. We girls have mostly been taught to be pretty and obedient, but the boys are being taught to be power-hungry little monsters who will take the family to greater heights than our mighty but short-lived father ever could.
Even though she’d realized from a young age that it was her brothers that mattered she’d always yearned to find ways to please her father. Even now, after blossoming into womanhood and starting to truly see her father for the brutal monster he was, she STILL yearned to please him. To know him better. To understand him.
“I believe it is time for my younger siblings to attend their afternoon classes,” she proclaimed, using her authority as oldest to send the pack of half-Vulpenite children of various ages back to the manor. “None of you would want to be late, would you? You want to please our Lord father, don’t you?”
“No, sister Avelina. Yes, sister Avelina,” they responded together, answering both her questions in the only manner they thought possible.
“Go on children,” Lord Luthanda told them, giving them each a meager smile of approval they’d all cherish till they next saw him.
It would be late that evening at supper when they’d all be made to share things they’d learned or accomplished during their day, each trying to one-up the other. Avelina could tell which of the youngest still didn’t understand what was happening during those evening meals. She’d recognized the moment each of the older ones had understood, for she remembered the moment well. Each of them, pitted against each other to prove who is most worthy of their Lord father’s meager love and, more importantly, his approval. Even the girls battled, even those old enough to understand they’d only ever be girls in their father’s eyes.
Once her siblings were out of sight Lord Luthanda chuckled. “I know you well, daughter. Your mind has been working recently. You’re curios. Smart. Driven. You’ve much more of me in you than your mother. You’ve been discovering things. Finding out secrets I’ve kept hidden from you.”
He stopped, turning to give her a reassuring look. “You’re old enough now to start knowing the truth about this noble family. How we gained our power. How we hold on to it. The things we do to gain MORE power. You’ve always had a kind heart, and as a girl I’ve indulged and even encouraged that. It’s your brothers who will need to be brutal, not you.”
The man took a step closer, reaching out to brush some of Avelina’s long, orange-red hair out of her face. He started to reach for one of her furry fox-ears but stopped. They both knew she was too old for that anymore. When she’d been younger such intimate contact had meant something different then it would mean now that she was a woman grown.
He sighed, pulling his hand back. “You remind more of your mother with every day that passes,” he muttered, turning from her. “Sometimes when I look at you now I can see only her. Oh, your Vulpenite features are softened slightly. The fur on your ears and tail is not as… thick? The color of your hair is more natural looking to Human eyes. And you can see my features in your face, but still… More than any of your sisters you look so much like her.”
“It always gladdens me when you mention her, Lord Father,” Avelina said, speaking with slow caution. It wasn’t often he did. Perhaps today would be the day she’d finally be able to discover something about the mysterious woman none of her siblings had ever met. “I’ve been meaning to ask—”
“Don’t,” her father said firmly as he cut her off. “I’m willing to dote on you endlessly, perhaps even more now that you’ve started to truly understand what being a Luthanda means.”
He paused, meeting her eyes. The hard look there made Avelina flinch and pull away. When he went on all affection was gone from his voice. “But I’ve told you, you or any of your siblings will never be told anything about your mother. None of you are to even ask about her as you were so foolishly about to do. Should any of you discover something, or even be found SEARCHING for information on her, you’ll be instantly disowned.”
The man abruptly turned his back on his daughter. “Only because you were her first born will I allow this near-degression to go unpunished. We shall pretend it did not happen, but be warned, daughter, I will not show such largess a second time to you.”
Avelina, aware of how close to danger she’d come, bowed her head and took a few steps back. “Yes, Lord Father. I understand.”
“Now enough of this,” he said, his tone making it clear they were to pretend the tense interaction hadn’t just transpired. “It is a lovely day and I’m sure you have things you wish to do now that you’re of age and your official schooling is ended. As for me, I’ve decided a ride to the city’s outskirts would do me well. Perhaps a visit to my special farm…”
* * *
Avelina knew what she was doing was reckless. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that this “special” farm that her father frequented on the outskirts of the city had SOMETHING to do with her mother.
They were all forbidden from even knowing the location of the farm, but that in and of itself didn’t mean much. Lord Luthanda, the brutal man he was, employed many unsavory characters and had many dubious business ventures he’d not wish his children interacting with or even knowing about, especially as all but Avelina were still underage.
But I’m a woman now, she told herself as she crept from the place she’d tied her horse up. The old man has always told us all that boldness pays the largest dividends. Well, I’m being bold. There’s no way he knows I’ve followed him and even though this suspicious ‘farm’ is being patrolled by a handful of his thugs I learned how to sneak by them years ago.
There HAS to be some clue here about who our mother is. We KNOW she’s still alive, as he’s mentioned we have another sibling on the way. But that’s ALL we know other than that she has to be a Vulpenite. There are so many things I want to know. Why has she been so willing to bear him so many children? Why has she never been a part of any of our lives? Why is even asking about her forbidden? I HAVE to know something, ANYTHING, no matter the cost.
At first Avelina didn’t see anything special about the farm. It seemed normal. Filled with the various kinds of livestock she’d expect to see. So why was it in such a secluded location? Why the guards? If it wasn’t for the way her father came here so often she’d think it was just where he kept his personal store of best animals destined for their dinner table, but because he DID come here so often there HAD to be more to it.
Then she saw him enter the barn, the special barn with the locked doors and the extra guards. For a few moments her heart sank. From the look on her father’s face whatever was hidden in that barn was why he came here as frequently as he did. But how could she get in to discover WHAT was in there? Sneaking past goons patroling the grounds was easy, but getting past guards standing sentry at a normally locked door? That was beyond her.
After fretting from her hiding place for a few minutes Avelina started looking up. She and her siblings had learned that the Humans of this region didn’t understand how different Vulpenites were from them. They had no idea how sensitive their senses were compared to theirs and always underestimated how agile and quick they could be.
I could get in unseen if I went through the cupola on top of the barn, Avelina realized excitedly. Climbing up there unseen should be easy for me, especially since I’ve learned Human guards rarely look up.
Although it wasn’t much more difficult then Avelina expected scaling the barn stealthily required far more time then she’d predicted. By the time she’d crawled her way into the rafters of the barn she worried her father would already be gone.
Her first thought when she looked down and saw her father was that she wished he HAD already left. He’d stripped and was having sex with a woman, a sight she could have happily gone her whole life without seeing. She quickly averted her eyes so as not to see her father doing THAT kind of thing with a woman. She winced at the sounds of his grunts of pleasure, further disturbed by the strange moans of delight the woman was returning.
They sounded almost like she was mooing. She had only gotten a glance before turning away but she’d seen the woman was on all fours like an animal, a collar and cowbell attached to her neck as though she were a cow-woman.
Avelina looked around the barn, disturbed by what she saw and trying to not hear the sounds of her father loudly fucking the cow-woman. It looked at first glance like what the inside of a cattle barn should look like, yet as she looked closer she saw things suggesting it wasn’t a cow that lived in the barn but a woman.
But not a woman that’s allowed to live like a person, she thought as ice ran cold through her veins. Whoever he keeps in here he somehow forces to live like a cow! And my Lord Father is fucking her! Gods, listen to him. Demanding she tell him how much she adores the feel of his manhood in her, and she only answers by mooing. Ugh, such disgusting perversion!
An awful gnawing ball of horror started to claw at the inside of her guts. Because she feared what she’d find if she took a closer look at the cow-woman her father was happily having his way with Avelina put off looking at her again for the time being.
Maybe she’s a Nemorvian, one of those bovine women I’ve read about. They’re valued prostitutes, perhaps she’s a special treat he keeps to himself? Or maybe it’s just a human woman made up to act out the life of a cow. I know my Lord Father is a perverse monster, perhaps this is just some sick sexual indulgence. Maybe even some foe of his that he’s defeated and enslaved this way to shame her? Somehow, as cruel and monstrous as such an act would be, it felt better to Avelina then what she feared was the truth.
I could leave, she told herself. Crawl back out the way I came without taking a closer look. I could let myself believe the woman is just a foe he’s enslaved in an utterly humiliating way. A Human, or a Dwarven woman perhaps. But certainly not a Vulpenite woman, it CAN’T be.
Yet she knew it COULD be. Deep inside she was already certain of the truth and she knew that knowing would make it all worse. Yet she couldn’t stop herself. She HAD to look. She had to know the race of the cow-woman her father was having his way with.
Avelina forced herself to look, focusing on the woman and trying her best not to see the indecent, perverse things her naked father was doing to the woman. A moment later, the gnawing in her stomach so intense she wanted to vomit, she looked away having seen what she feared she’d see.
It was a Vulpenite woman. One with orange-red hair and fur, only slightly more vibrant than Avelina’s. One whose face looked startlingly like hers. A woman who was pregnant, just about confirming who she was.
The horror grew when she looked back, staring into the cow-woman’s eyes. There was no “person” in there, no intelligence. This wasn’t some sick play acting she was carrying out to please her father. The woman was a beast. Something terrible had been done to her mind to turn it into a cow-woman! And the poor woman’s breasts! Massive and sagging onto the ground, looking more like cow’s udders than a woman’s breasts. Gods, what had her father done to this woman?
Just a woman, Avelina thought. There’s no proof she’s my mother. I can leave now and always be unsure, always live not knowing for sure.
As if intentionally robbing any doubt from Avelina’s mind her father slapped the cow-woman’s ass, groaned out in pleasure as he spent himself inside her, then proclaimed, “I know you’ve already given me several male heirs and there’s another already potentially growing in your belly, but gods it always feels good emptying my balls in you!”
Avelina was so disturbed and distraught that she struggled to get out of the barn without being heard. Climbing back down and making it back to her horse without being seen was even harder. But once she was on the horse, once she was riding, she rode hard.
He’s a monster, she thought as tears streamed down her face. More a brutal monster than I could have imagined. And now I know the truth about our mother, or at least enough to understand I need to get as far away from him as possible.
Her mind raced as she rode as quickly as possible back to the Luthanda estate. She wanted to be gone before her father returned. She didn’t ever want to see him again, didn’t want to know more about WHY her mother was being kept like that or HOW she’d been turned into a cow-woman. She just wanted to be gone, to leave the horrible revelation and her father far behind and never look back.
Gather what money and valuables I can take with me and be gone before he returns, she told herself. Leave him a note, telling him I know the truth about our mother and accept my disowning. Vow to never return, letting him know how deeply I wish never to see him again. And make it clear I haven’t told any of my siblings, and that I hope he finds a way to keep this terrible secret better from them than he did from me!
She rode harder, perfecting the words of the letter in her mind. Certain she’d be gone by the time her father returned, and even more certain she’d NEVER return to anywhere near this city. And although Avelina was correct about when she’d be gone by she was VERY wrong about never returning…
To be continued in “She Was Too Low Level: Avelina Luthanda”
The winner of the last poll determined that this story will be continued in a new “She Was Too Low Level” story centering on Avelina after running away and taking on the life of an Adventurer. Below will be some polls helping set that up, starting from the premise that Avelina will be returning as an Adventurer to the same town, where the Guildmaster still runs the Guildhall and where her father, and siblings, still live.
Before fleshing out Avelina’s starting point lets work on the other almost certainly recurring characters.
A “She’s Too Low Level” story would feel just wrong without the same Guildmaster. I have for the most part tried to keep most of the stories self contained, with only some hints at common things interconnecting them. So far there has been no need to worry about continuity or the passage of time, but THIS story requires a significant time jump from the start of the last one.
I like to leave character’s ages vague in these (of age, young woman, older man, elderly man). A problem I realized almost right away is the Guildmaster has always been described as an “older man”. Depending on what’s worked best for the story and character point of view I’ve left that VERY vague, but he’s at least old enough to have retired from the life of an Adventurer so a time jump of roughly twenty years should matter for a Human.
I don’t want to have to deal with aging him up, so how should the story deal with the Guildmaster not having meaningfully aged? (Choose up to 2 options from this poll)
There is a poll below that will deal with WHY Avelina has returned to her original home and that might set up her father as the main antagonist. Whether he is or not he is the main antagonist he, and her (now adult) siblings, will still almost certainly appear in the story.
How much should incest kink be a part of this story? (Choose up to 2 options from this poll)
We’ve established that Avelina looks the most like her mother out of all her siblings. But does that mean she takes after her mother BEFORE she wore the ring of Oohr or AFTER? (Choose up to 2 options from this poll)
Why will Avelina be returning to the city her father lives in? (Choose up to 3 options from this poll)
